Question

Do children blame themselves for the death of a family member?

Answer

Many children believe they caused the death of a parent or sibling.  The consequences of guilt can be deep and long-reaching, so learn to spot the signs that your child may be struggling with this powerful emotion.

Questions When is a child too young to attend a wake or funeral?
Answer

No child is too young--if your child is well-prepared and well-supported.  Meanwhile, adult family members gather in a separate room to learn about children and grief and to discuss issues of parenting a bereaved family.  At the conclusion of the group time, parents and kids come together to complete a joint activity designed to facilitate family communication about their grief.  A closing ceremony completes the session.

Questions

Can a preschooler understand the concept of death?

Answer

Yes, with concrete explanations and language.

Questions

Should I worry about a child committing suicide after a family death?

Answer

Although uncommon, there are signals no parent dare miss when it comes to an extreme reaction to grief...especially among adolescents.
